Where have you come from?
We both worked at MBLA more than eight years, Thiede helped build the healthcare portfolio and Daniels was involved in urban renewal.

What are your ambitions?
To be big enough to take on large-scale projects while still being able to feel and operate as one team – somewhere between 10-20 people. The studio feels like a workshop and we enjoy a multidisciplinary approach, drawing inspiration from areas beyond architecture. We are fond of being a Manchester practice, but certainly have ambitions to pursue work further afield.

What work do you have?
We’ve been in a few competitions to establish our company profile and won a commission to convert and extend a Grade II-listed cottage in Yorkshire. We hope to secure a few medium-sized, residential developments to get us going. Initially we have used existing contacts to win work, but we have started to approach new clients and we plan to participate in competitions across Europe.

What are the biggest challenges facing yourself as a start-up?
It is still early days and we have only just started to test the market. There are concerns that the inflexible format of some PQQ processes may make it difficult to capitalise on our expertise when bidding for work in certain sectors. But we are working on it, and hope to make some progress over the next year.
