New practices: Chris Donoghue Architects

  • Comment

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Chris Donoghue Architects, Wells and Glastonbury

Main people: Chris Donoghue

Founded: April 2013

Where have you come from?
I qualified in 2001 and joined Wilkinson Eyre Architects (WEA) where I primarily worked on education projects. I relocated to Somerset in 2007 when my kids arrived and delivered a number of West Country commissions for WEA before establishing my own local practice.

What work do you have?
I have a mix of projects including private residential, community use and education projects – albeit on a smaller scale than when I was with WEA.

What is your outlook?
A sole trader’s strength is the ability to adapt and collaborate with other like-minded professionals. I operate from a shared studio within a community-focused enterprise [The Red Brick Building]. It’s like being back at art college.

How optimistic are you as a start-up practice?
I believe it’s prudent to win work from a range of sources. I mix my professional practice with part-time tutoring at the Welsh School of Architecture and design consultancy work for other micro-studios.

What is the practice’s appeal?
My practice is founded on high-quality design and project management experience, and uses sustainable contemporary design solutions to overcome everyday needs.
