New Practices #93: Hewitt & Carr Architects

  • Comment

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Hewitt & Carr Architects, Cheadle, Staffordshire Moorlands

Founded: August 2011

Main people: Natalie Hewitt and Mark Carr

Where have you come from? Natalie joined Hulme Upright in 2005 as a year out student, qualifying as an architect in April 2011. Mark worked at the practice for 22 years, before  it went into administration in July.

What work do you have and what kind of projects are you looking for? Havingonly been trading since August we are pleased to have 60 jobs come through our door, a better start than we could have ever imagined. Housing forms a great deal of our workload having worked on extensions, alterations and new build residences both locally andeven down in Surrey. We are beginning to add to our commercialclient base with the appointment for a new children’s day nursery, office extensions and alterations and work on a series of salon shop fit-outs up and down the country.

What are your ambitions? To have our own premises in five years time to act as a show piece for our design flair.  Ideally we would like to stay local to Cheadle and the Staffordshire Moorlands and have a team of between seven and 10 staff.  We want to be known for our ability to offer high quality architecture at a large company standard for a small company price.

How optimistic are you as a start-up practice? Media reports haven’t helped with the economic recovery of the UK and always harm the construction industry as a whole.  Our main focus currently is the residential market, allowing us to turn projects around quickly and help the business grow financially, however that doesn’t mean we are ignoring the commercial/public sector possibilities.  We strive for a big company mentality at small company prices and this means our clients are paramount.  The residential client would far rather deal with a professional they can relate to and can depend on whenever they have a question or a fear.
