New Practices #9: Craig Amy Architect

  • Comment

The ninth in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Craig Amy Architect, Prestopans, East Lothian

Founded: Founded February 2007, but finally started working full time in July 2009

Main person: Craig Amy

Where have you come from? I graduated from Dundee University in 2001 and started working for Richard Murphy Architects in Edinburgh. I took voluntary redundancy in July this year.

What work do you have? I founded my practice in 2007 to do homes for friends and family. I started working full time in July 2009. I’ve already completed a couple of small extensions and converted a shop into a flat for myself. Since July, I’ve secured four extensions and the conversion of a shop in Edinburgh’s New Town into a gallery for Autism Initiatives UK. I won Stirling Developments’ Calderwood design competition in July, to design a new house typology for its West Lothian development. I hope to graduate to small public and commercial buildings and residential schemes over the next couple of years.

What are your ambitions? I’m very content working at a desk in the corner of my kitchen. As things progress, I would look to set up a small office in Edinburgh. The thought of employing staff scares me, but I’m sure it will be easy to adapt. Family life comes first, so I just want to enjoy my life and work. So far so good.

How optimistic are you? I’ve been very lucky over the past five months. I’ve a lot of support from friends and family so feel confident that I can succeed with my own practice. Fingers crossed.
