New Practices #64: Office Sian Architecture + Design

  • Comment

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone, either through choice or redundancy

Office Sian Architecture + Design, London, SE1

Founded: early 2010

Main people: Gurmeet Sian

Where have you come from? I’ve previously worked for Rita Mody Joshi Architects in Goa, Inglis Badrashi Loddo Architects, London, and LTS Architects, London.

What work do you have? Projects over the last year have varied from running children’s architecture workshops, to residential and public-funded commissions. Our approach to architecture benefits from the development of built and theoretical work, and the occasional merging of the two – we therefore look to engage more with the public realm, and focus on larger residential and community-based commissions (see the practice’s Hackney Shed project here).

What are your ambitions? The goal of the studio is not only to work on built projects in the UK, but also to continue to nurture close relationships with clients, and deeper understandings of the brief and context. The broad ambition would be to try to establish a portfolio of well-designed commissions in this country, and then foster new relationships with clients abroad.

How optimistic are you? Optimism is part of the job. The best advice I was given was to perfect the scale of commission you are working on now. Larger commissions will arrive when people see ambition in your work, whatever the size or cost of the project.
