New Practices #38: Chris Rhodes Architect

  • Comment

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone, either through choice or redundancy

Chris Rhodes Architect, East Lothian

Founded:May 2010

Main people: Chris Rhodes (me, myself and I)

Where have you come from? I began my professional career at Richard Murphy Architects, gaining further experience at JM Architects and, most recently, as associate director at Threesixty Architecture (Edinburgh/Glasgow + Inverness). After becoming a statistic in early 2009, I took a year out to consider my options.

What work do you have? My first project, an exciting cottage conversion/extension in a conservation area, is nearing completion. I’m working on several more conversions and extensions, many of which are to listed buildings or in conservation areas. I’ve secured commissions for domestic new-build properties, and have provided architectural input on various commercial projects.

What are your ambitions? I want to continue exploring architecture as an individual and to become known for high-quality, sustainable design. I want to regulate the inevitable peaks and troughs of work, finding the right balance between work and family life.

How optimistic are you? I was initially pessimistic, but now I’ve begun to establish myself and have made some good contacts, I’m confident that, for now at least, the worst is behind me. I’m looking forward to developing the practice for many years to come – wish me luck!
