The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone, either through choice or redundancy

Main people: Sandy Rendel

Where have you come from? I was as an associate at Tony Fretton Architects for six years, working on a range of residential, commercial and public buildings. Prior to that I was an associate at James Gorst Architects.

What work do you have? Currently we have a range of new-build and refurbishment residential work with both private clients and self-builders. We are collaborating with other firms on projects in the UK and Ireland and are designing and building my own home in London. Our aim now is to win commissions for larger-scale projects in the arts, education and housing sectors, and we are pursuing competitions and joint ventures as possible ways to achieve this.

What are your ambitions?Our ambition is for steady and stable growth over the next three years, becoming a small to medium-sized practice. We would like to develop a broad portfolio of work and a reputation for well-designed and well-constructed buildings with enduring quality, value and meaning.

How optimistic are you?
It is a challenging climate and it will be a tough couple of years, but we are excited and optimistic about them. Establishing lean and efficient business practices and an adaptable structure will keep us in good shape for the future.
