New Practices #24: Green Cube Architects

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Green Cube Architects, London, SE1

Full time from March 2010

Main person Peter Williams

Where have you come from? I worked full-time at Make for several years, going part-time in mid-2009. Before Make, I worked with practices of differing scales, although my experience at Patel Taylor influenced my work and approach the most.

What work do you have? We have several projects, from a £60,000 domestic extension to a £3 million prep school in west London. We are interested in smaller, more bespoke projects, whether working with an existing building or a more complex brief with a client-centred approach. We would like to become involved in housing for an ageing society; a sector that we believe is too often neglected.

What are your ambitions? To stay small and focused, growing steadily to around five to 10 people. We would also like to collaborate with other practices on winning and realising work and forming a laboratory for ideas. There are French practices that work on this basis, such as PLAN01, which is a very exciting model for collaborative work.

How optimistic are you? We believe that in the years to come the needs of clients will be better served by smaller practices, rather than the commercial machines. We approach every day with heaps of optimism and the occasional pang of trepidation.
