The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Where have you come from? Last year, I worked in New York for Christian Wassmann. Before that, I was a member of the cooperative at Edward Cullinan Architects, which was a great organisation to be part of. I’ve also worked in property development for the Leeds-based KW Linfoot PLC.
What work do you have? We’d like to build strong, lasting relationships with clients and develop a business model that involves fewer competitions so we can use our time and energy to listen to the clients we already have, as well as meet more.
What are your ambitions? We want to pull together all the miscellaneous strands of technology, economics, politics and scarce environmental resources into creative architecture. If we do that, then practice size and location are secondary. At the moment we’re working in a networked way with me based in the studio collaborating with a handful of remote CoWorkers; designers, entrepreneurs and artists.
How optimistic are you?You have to be optimistic to start up in the first place. Maybe the recession and the associated uncertainty have opened up certain opportunities for small practices with new ideas and strategies. These innovations may not be all that profitable now but that may change in the next five years.
