New practice: Enjoy Design

  • Comment

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Enjoy Design, Leeds

Founded: October 2010

Main people: Andrew Newton, Wesley Dodds, Ryan Groves, Gregg Mitchell

Where have you come from? Aedas and Carey Jones

What work do you have? We’ve been encouraged by the range of work we’ve been able to secure in both private and public sectors. We’re currently working up schemes for student accommodation, a legal fit-out, commercial offices, schools, civic buildings, data centres, private residential, light industrial, car showrooms and mixed-use masterplans with a range of contract values from £100,000
to £20 million.

What are your ambitions? Having all previously worked at a senior level in large commercial practices, we deliberately set out to reduce our managerial activities and return to being architects again. We pride ourselves on working collectively within a relaxed studio atmosphere. Our strategy is for sustained and sensible growth retaining those same core principles, whilst our discrete professionalism means we do not feel the need to shout about our clients work nor aim to become the next large northern practice.

What marketing have you used? We’ve taken offices in the heart of Leeds city centre with our own front door, which has created a culture where our clients feel able to call in at any time for an informal meeting. We haven’t felt the need to instigate a high-profile marketing campaign, as our industry is very personality driven. ‘Word of mouth’ has proven to be our best ally.
