New Paddington tower marks Robin Partington's debut

Robin Partington has revealed his first major scheme since leaving Hamiltons (now BFLS) last year

The Merchant Square project in Paddington Basin for European Land, a joint venture between the Jarvis Family and the Reuben brothers, features a 41-storey mixed-use hotel and residential tower with a sky bar on the top floor.

The skyscraper is one of four planning applications submitted to Westminster City Council last week by his practice Robin Partington Architects for the canalside plot.

A previous scheme for the site had been drawn up by Perkins+ Will with Michel Mossessian.

Partington, the one-time Foster + Partners ace is often hailed as the unsung member of the team behind the Stirling Prize-winning 30 St Mary Axe, otherwise known as the Gherkin.

Intriguingly he new 140m-tall Paddington tower has already been dubbed The Cucumber.

Describing the scheme Partington said: ‘The tower will become the focus for Paddington and gateway to the centre of London, one of the last pieces in the puzzle that will unify the whole, marking the amazing transformation and regeneration of this part of London, into what is already a popular place for people to live and work, supported by great public realm.’
