New images of NORD Glasgow hospice

New images have been revealed of NORD Architecture’s designs for a new £18million hospice in Glasgow

The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice has had a facility at Carlton Place, Glasgow, for 30 years, but commissioned NORD to design a new facility at Bellahouston Park to allow the hospice to extend its services.

Four interconnecting ‘villas’ will house 14 patient rooms, two young adult rooms and two patient-family rooms which can accommodate up to four people each.

Alastair Forbes, project architect at NORD Architecture said: ‘One of the key considerations for NORD has been taking the time to understand the existing hospice. There’s such a strong culture and ethos, which is apparent from the moment you walk through the front door, that dispels a lot of the myths about what a hospice is.’

He added: ‘The proposed site has enormous opportunities for patients, families, staff and volunteers, passing through the avenue of trees gives a hugely positive psychological effect. Set within the site the building reads as four large villas so that at no time can the building be read in its entirety [which] realises the challenge of providing a “non-institutional” facility.’

A planning application for the scheme will be made in the first week of February.

The director of NORD Architecture, Alan Pert, is also Professor at the Melbourne School of Design and will be working on a research project between Melbourne University and the Centre for Palliative Care which will explore hospice design.
