New contest: Design a ‘landmark’ for Leeds

Developer Citu, in partnership with the AJ, has launched a contest to design ‘an inspirational landmark’ on one of Leeds’ last waterfront sites

The plot on the north bank of the River Aire is currently a car park between converted warehouses in the Yorkshire city’s historic Calls district.

Entrants into the ‘36 The Calls Design Competition’ are asked to produce proposals for the best new, sustainable commercial building in Leeds.

Director of Citu Chris Thompson said: ‘The winner of this contest should be a symbol of great design for Yorkshire. Something to be proud of. Something to make people stop and stare.

‘Innovative architecture will ensure the development is a positive contribution to the existing urban environment
while maintaining the city’s relationship with the river.’

The deadline for submissions into the two-stage contest is 16 December 2009

The AJ will showcase the shortlisted designs in a special edition in the New Year. Finalists invited for interview will receive a £1,000 honorarium. A winner will be announced in February

Entrants will need to pay a £35 registration fee. To enter and download a full brief visit: www.citu.co.uk/36thecalls

  • Why can't the competition organizers provide some detailed info regarding brief, site etc before I’ve handed over £35 registration fee only to find its not worth entering...!

Why not release the brief etc with payment of a registration fee on submission of competition proposals...?

    I wonder...

  • Surely the landmarks - the warehouses and the canal - are already there?
