Networking is the way forward

Paul Hyett (aj 7.5.98) asks about the need for fellowship, criticism and exchange among practitioners. We have witnessed in Scotland over the last few years a growth in the networking of sole practitioner (or sole proprietor) groups. Started in Dundee as an offshoot of its successful local cpd programme, there are also now well-established groups in Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

They have taken the initiative with regard to arb's code requirements for sickness and holiday (and disaster) cover for each other, and are finding multiple benefits. So much so, they are exercising their collective muscle to negotiate more than from the rias and its services.

These are important and welcome changes from which a stronger and more flexible profession may grow.

SEBASTIAN TOMBS

Secretary and treasurer, rias
