NCS Colours For Brands & Products

  • Comment

Specification of corporate colour often starts with graphic designers. This results in many colours being first specified for print or screen based systems. Corporate colour, however, may be applied to the interior and exterior of buildings, for transport, uniforms, and products as well as print and screen.

Transport for London
With over 3.6 million London Underground and 6.8 million London Buses passenger journeys every day, Transport for London runs one of the busiest and most complex transportation systems in the world including; Buses, Underground, Overground, Light rail, Taxis, Trams and River.
Carefully controlled use of corporate, mode, safety and London Underground line colours is highly effective in communicating the strengths of the organisation. Consistent use of colour across journey planners, signage and livery etc, also helps guide passengers to their destination. For more than 20 years NCS has featured in the Transport for London guidelines.

Virgin Little Red Book

We all know what we mean by red, but for Virgin the right colour red is defined in their ‘Little Red Book’.

To quote from the book:

“What might look like the right red in isolation rarely is. And if different shades appear, then the effect of having a ‘Virgin Red’ is lessened”.

Virgin uses a number of different colour systems for a wide variety

of applications including buildings, print and web. NCS can be used

for all these.

Colour tolerance guides for IKEA

Ikea uses NCS visual tolerance guides as a practical way of controlling its corporate blue and yellow.

Colour can vary by six dimensions: plus or minus hue, blackness and chromaticness. Special NCS sheets can be made and printed with the company logo, and special swatches can be made to show corporate and dress colours for buildings.

Special colours for Ericsson

NCS has 1,950 colours designed

to cover in depth the hues and nuances most in demand, but special colour standards can be created if required.

The Ericsson Color Palette includes two special NCS colour standards: 0078-R98B for Ericsson Accent Blue and 0089-Y65R for Ericsson Accent Orange. Ericsson is one example of the many companies and organisations using NCS for their corporate colours.

Caterpillar colours

Caterpillar is one of a number of companies that have used NCS Global Management services. To quote Marcus Hanser, Brand Manager at Caterpillar: “We have three important colours. But there is a jungle of different notations, names, codes and so on for all the different materials we are using… What can NCS do for us?”

First was an analysis of the colours currently being used for a variety of applications. Then agreement on target colours, and the production of special colour sheets as colour standards for suppliers - and visual colour tolerance guides to enable easy checking.

Accurate colour communication

NCS has a range of 1,950 colours and guaranteed accuracy. It ensures good colour communication between designers, specifiers, contractors, manufacturers and clients.

NCS colours are available in paint and powder from the main coatings companies. Laminates, ceramic tile and hard flooring companies reference their colours to NCS while manufacturers use NCS colour standard for matching and quality control.

Accurate colour is easier to control and much easier to protect in law.
