Natural ventilation: Pembury Hospital, Kent

  • Comment

One of four case studies examining the use of natural ventilation in health centres

Pembury Hospital Redevelopment, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, Anshen + Allen

Completion date 2012
Services engineer DSSR
Gross internal floor area² 65,500m
Predicted annual CO2 emissions 72.74kg/m²
NEAT Excellent 76.15 per cent

Pembury Hospital redevelopment combines two existing hospitals to provide an acute district general hospital with 512 beds and a new women’s and children’s centre.  This will be the first major NHS facility with 100 per cent single rooms using natural ventilation.

The typical single bedroom window is comprised of a fixed glazed panel and a full-height louvred operable vent.  The louvres are offset by 100mm to comply with HTM 55, yet provide the requisite free area to meet ventilation requirements. Patient bedrooms are designed not
to exceed 28°C for more than 50 hours a year.

Approximately 20 per cent of the hospital floor area is naturally ventilated, including most consulting examination rooms. Mechanical extract ventilation in
the en-suite bathrooms augments cross-ventilation through trickle vents in each operable window.

Dynamic thermal modelling was used to predict peak internal temperatures in order to calculate the necessary air volumes and comfort temperature criteria.
