Natural lime mortar

  • Comment

An information paper on the use of natural lime mortars for new building is now available on BDA's website, www.brick.org.uk. It is supported by several masonry industry organisations.

Interest in natural lime mortars has been growing, fuelled by alleged environmental and design advantages, but authoritative detailed guidance is not readily available.

BDA and Ceram Research set up a seminar earlier this year to concentrate attention on the need for technical guidance. There is particular concern about the lack of structural design information on flexural strength and the unjustified relaxation of provisions for the accommodation of movement in masonry.
