Nicky Gavron, deputy leader of the Greater London Authority, kept delegates amused at a sustainable transport conference in Croydon last week by referring to the 'new Chutney line extension' which, she insisted, was 'definitely going to be completed by 4004'.

Confiding that the Greater London Authority was in the process of 'reconceptualising the bus', she concluded her short presentation by saying that 'none of our transport strategies does not have a clear objective'.

Actually the Chutney Line reference is rather clever: the planned new route from Hackney to Chelsea is to be extended south-west to Putney.
