Most people can only name two living architects, and think Sir Christopher Wren is still with us.They are the assumptions to be drawn from a poll by Mori, commissioned by CABE and published last week. It may be that a certain percentage of the population enjoy telling pollsters that they think Wren is alive. Another statistic more to CABE's liking concerned its own recognition factor: no less than 10 per cent of the weighted sample claimed to know of its existence, a remarkable achievement for a body only formed in autumn 1999.

No doubt this intelligence was conveyed to the ministerial architectural champions meeting under Lord Falconer's aegis yesterday.
