This year's 100% Design show was as packed as ever, not least on the busy AJ stand. The show had its dramas, most of them before it opened. Designer Ben Kelly's plan for the large roof space was to use giant helium-filled balloons. Alas, in a scene worthy of a silent movie, one of them burst on being over-inflated, and the men in uniform declared the balloons verboten. The roof space looked a bit empty. Another example of deflation took place in a failed attempt to move Tim Pyne's mobile home, M-House (pronounce it any way you like), to the show. A burst tyre resulted in the home being less than mobile, since it had only moved about six inches. It remains in a shed in Kent. Pyne turned up in cheerful mood at the show, wondering where Ben K was ('Has anybody here seen Kelly?').
Happily, there is demand for the M-House from country estate types, so Londoners may never experience the design in the flesh.
