More work in West Kowloon up for grabs

A fresh slice of work on Hong Kong’s £1.7 billion West Kowloon Cultural District is expected to go to market this autumn

AJ understands the competition to design the first stage of the M+ Museum will be launched within the next two months.

The news comes as Aric Chen, creative director of Beijing Design Week, has been appointed design and architecture curator of the M+ scheme.

The museum will feature exhibits of visual culture from 1900 to the present day. It will sit alongside several theatres and performance venues on the huge masterplan.

In July, Foster + Partners was named on an impressive five-strong shortlist to design one of the first buildings within the District (see AJ 17.07.2012).

The practice will compete with Dutch stars Mecanoo and three others for the Xiqu Centre scheme.

Construction on the array of arts venues is expected to start in 2013.

Foster + Partners is overseeing the masterplan, having beaten OMA to the job in early 2011.

The London practice had designed a previous masterplan for the site, but it was ditched in 2006 when the local authorities decided to reappraise the scheme.
