The RIBA is set to consider new proposals for minimum wages for architectural students at its next council meeting on May 17. The proposals, to pay a minimum annual salary of £10,000 in the provinces and £12,000 in the London area, will be debated, along with plans for working hours and holiday and sick pay to be brought in line with the eu working directive. It comes following a survey of the finances of architecture students in 1998/1999 which revealed that 12 per cent of students worked for below the minimum wage. The RIBA practice committee passed the proposal from RIBA council student representatives last month.
