Head of Architecture at Greenwich University Neil Spiller has attracted three top colleagues from the Bartlett, his former school, and hopes to recruit more big names

Full time lecturers Nic Clear, the Bartlett’s head of postgraduate design, part-time lecturer Suzanne Isa and Simon Herron, Isa’s husband and senior teaching fellow have all moved to the Greenwich University in time for the start of the new academic year.

Their new positions will be Academic leader in architecture design, academic leader in architecture technology and full time lecturer respectively.

Cyberspace-guru Spiller revealed other appointments were in the pipeline. He told the AJ: ‘My intentions are to bolster the staff at Greenwich starting with three of the world’s top architects.’

He added: ‘I’m here because Greenwich knew I could bring my network of experienced lecturers starting with three colleagues from the Bartlett and others might be on their way too.

‘Architecture schooling, as a whole, has always been somewhat provincial in its outlook. I want to totally change the dynamics of education in architecture to make it more of a worldly art form.’

Last year was Spiller’s first as head of architecture at Greenwich and followed nearly two decades at the Bartlett. The ‘visionary’ academic allegedly threatened to fail 117 first year students, ordering them to resubmit portfolios or be forced to leave the course.

Iain Borden, vice-dean for Communications at the Bartlett, said he was unconcerend about the departures from the school. He said: ‘This is part of the natural cycle experienced at every large academic institution. It is a fact of life that academics will move on from time to time, and we are more confident than ever that it will be business as usual at the Bartlett School of Architecture.’

He added: ‘Since 2010, we have seen the arrival of Professor Murray Fraser and of Frederic Migayrou as the new Bartlett Professor of Architecture, further strengthening the Bartlett’s pool of senior talent.  The remaining posts – two lecturers and a teaching fellow – are being filled by a combination of new hires and promotions from within.”

A student at the Bartlett who is entering his fifth year explained that ‘students who have been drawn to the Bartlett because of the association with the Archigram fellowship of Peter Cook and Ron Herron, and undoubtedly Simon Herron – Ron Herron’s son - who has been at the institute for around 21 years.
