The Channel Tunnel and Renzo Piano Building Workshop's huge Kansai International Airport project in Japan, jointly built with Arup, were last week nominated Monuments of the Millennium by the American Society of Civil Engineers. Two of 10 such monuments recognized by society, they are ranked alongside the Golden Gate Bridge as some of the twentieth century's greatest engineering achievements. The airport is located on a man-made island and caters for 160,000 aircraft movements a year. Arup project director for the airport Philip Dilley said the award recognized the innovative and complex nature of the engineering feat.
