news

The mod is trying to list more than 100 barracks to protect them - despite selling them off to the private sector after years of neglect.

The list has been drawn up with English Heritage and has grown out of the collaboration of the two organisations on a book, British Barracks 1600-1914 - Their Architecture and Role in Society, launched yesterday (Wednesday) by listings minister Tony Banks. Barracks are the first group of military buildings to be studied by eh's listing team.

Michael Hopkins and Partners' new Cake House, a cafe and restaurant to replace the existing structure in St James's Park, will have a curved grass roof at the rear as the ground is rolled over the design. Windows to the £1.6 million building will overlook the park lake and the roof will have seating and a wood promenade.
