MJP Architects and Richard MacCormac has unveiled its plans for a new office block as part of the controversial new St Helier Esplanade Quarter in Jersey

The 6,220m² grade A building for the Island’s finance industry has been developed with Eric Parry Architects which was responsible for the basement infrastructure and access.
Backed by the States of Jersey Development Company, the scheme will be the first delivered within a masterplan originally drawn up by Hopkins in 2006 (see AJ 25.05.2006) which was later revised and eventually rubberstamped in March 2011.
However the proposed financial district has been repeatedly in the headlines with St Helier’s Constable, Simon Crowcroft, among others, speaking out against the office-led plans.
Last October Crowcroft admitted he was not convinced the town needed more commercial space, arguing that it should be kept for either a new hospital or a car park.
The column-free MJP scheme will be the first building in the Channel Islands to target a BREEAM Excellent rating and will ‘boast natural light on all four sides.’
Richard MacCormac, former MJP founder and now of MacCormac Architect, said: ‘The genesis of the building has been a special experience of collaboration and exemplary design ideas. The challenge of office buildings as a type, particularly framed buildings, is to develop elevations which convey a sense of volume rather than surface, through depth and materiality. In other words the elevation should convey something of the three dimensional quality of the building as a whole.’
