Mission trip: RIBA helps spring Libyan equivalent

RIBA has hosted a five-day mission to Libya to help establish partnerships in the war-battered country

Senior representatives of the association travelled with members of UK practices to the Middle East in late March.

RIBA head of international Marcus Deeley led the delegation, which also included members of the RIBA International Committee.

Deeley said: ‘Our Libyan mission is in support of the newly established Libyan Board of Architects and Libyan Institute of Architects with the intention of establishing long-term, institutional, educational and practice-to-practice partnerships that are the necessary foundations for a sustainable and community-focused future for Libya’s built environment.’

Last year, British Expertise Middle East director Dominic James told AJ British companies were in an excellent position to win work in Libya.

Not-for-profit membership organisation British Expertise took a number of UK firms including Capita Symonds and GMW Architects to Tripoli on a trade mission in early 2012.

The country needs major rebuilding after the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in late 2011.

James said shortly after the British Expertise mission: ‘British companies are in an excellent position, partly because of our role in the conflict and partly because of our reputation for quality.’
