MACCORMAC JAMIESON PRICHARD
This will be a new public space located in front of the existing Museum of British Road Transport. It offers opportunities for a range of possible uses which will be the subject of an arts and events programme, co-ordinated with events in the cathedral and its environs. It will be a venue for open-air concerts and plays, and in winter may become a skating rink. The focus of Millennium Place will be a pair of video screens with a range of potential uses, such as revenue-earning advertising, city-wide information, and the relay of sporting and arts events such as plays and concerts taking place in the cathedral. A further intention is to create interactive links with Coventry’s twin cities.
The opening up of the Cathedral Close, the landscaping of the Priory Garden and the construction of the Millennium Boulevard, leading to Millennium Place, will give a new focus to the city, amplified by a series of collaborations with artists working in various media. The project will embody the spirit of past achievement in Coventry, while looking forward with enthusiasm to the new millennium.
