[IMAGES + PROJECT DATA + PLANS] Cardiff-based Boyes Rees Architects has secured three key contracts worth over £5 million for the improvement of three schools for Bath and North East Somerset Council

The work includes the modernisation of Midsomer Norton Primary School and Weston All Saints Church of England Primary School in Bath, as well as a feasibility study for The Link, a special school in North East Somerset.

  • The £2.7million Weston All Saints Primary School scheme will involve the design of a new building to replace the existing junior block, increasing the pupil capacity of the school. The new building will include eight classrooms, an assembly hall, a kitchen, group space, specialist practical space, an IT suite, a library resource, administrative facilities and a staff room. A specialist hearing impaired resource base will also be provided, comprising a teaching room, office and storage.

  • The Midsomer Norton Primary School scheme, worth £1.4million, is located in the centre of the town’s conservation area, and includes the re-modelling and refurbishment of the existing Victorian school hall to create a contemporary and flexible learning resource area. The project will also see the replacement of four temporary accommodation buildings with a permanent building, to include a school hall, reception classrooms, and nursery.

Graham David, director at Boyes Rees Architects said: ‘All of these schemes have presented exciting challenges to our specialist education team, particularly the Midsomer Norton site, as we are limited to working on a restricted plateau of land on an otherwise sloping site, and have had to come up with a design concept that links the new building to the existing school.

‘Throughout the design stage we have undertaken regular consultation activities with school pupils and teachers, using collage and modelmaking activities to capture the pupils’ aspirational ideas and convey them to our design team.’
