Midnight's children

A glittering array of guests turned up for the champagne launch of Kenneth Powell 's excellent tome on the Richard Rogers Partnership ,held at the practice's new spec office building on Wood Street in the City.Astragal spotted University Challenge's Bamber Gascoigne talking to Salman Rushdie ,who is a friend to the Rogerses and was later to be seen in conversation with TV foodie Nigella Lawson .Well-known architects were also well represented - Stirling Prize winners Amanda Levete and Jan Kaplicky ,and runner-up Chris Wilkinson amongst them.

Nick Raynsford was there, taking a break from all things mayoral, and John Prescott was to be heard mumbling good things about why he liked Rogers'buildings. He left - by car - just before the England game with Scotland, but not before he was also collared by Pimlico School architect and Twentieth Century Society stalwart John Bancroft ,about a possible money-saving PFI refurb of the school ..The evening's only curious note was the failure of either the publisher or Richard R to mention the book's author in their speechettes.
