Michel Mossessian beats hundreds to land Fez jackpot

London’s Mossessian & Partners has seen off an incredible number of entrants to land the project to overhaul the historic Place Lalla Yeddouna, in the Medina of Fez, Morocco

More than 1,400 architects from around the globe made expressions of interest for the key regeneration scheme in the UNESCO world heritage site from which 175 practices presented work.

The firm was eventually selected from a shortlist of eight practices which included fellow London-based outfit Moxon Architects of London - partnering with Aime Kakon of Casablanca - which scooped third place.

Working with Casablanca-based Yassir Khalil Studio, Mossessian has drawn up plans for the mixed-use redevelopment and of the 7,400m² Place Lalla Yeddouna which includes the preservation of historic buildings and a series of new interventions, creating a home for ‘artisans, boutiques, cafés and other recreational facilities’.

The heart of the oldest part of Fez, the area is a ‘mosaic of small-scale, modest, sand-coloured houses with an endless labyrinth of narrow streets’ but has turned its back on the Oued Al Jawahir riverfront.

The practice won $55,000
