I was very interested to read the piece promoting zero defects for the project for the University of East London (AJ 11.5.00).
The photographs show the building to an advantage. However, it is disappointing that the mechanical services have been added as an afterthought with exposed flues and plant rooms on balconies overlooking the main thoroughfare. Perhaps this is the result of an M & E design and build contract which does not allow the services engineer to have any input into the building design at an early stage so as to eliminate aesthetic defects.
