McLaughlin's Hull Arc set to survive until 2015

The temporary Arc building in Hull, designed by Niall McLaughlin Architects, may have its life expectancy increased by another five years

Despite being designed as a ‘kit of parts’ which could move ‘from key site to key site over a 20-year period’, planning permission is being sought by the charitable trust behind the architecture centre for it to remain where it is until the end of November 2015.

The centre’s original closing date is November 30 2011 but the trust argues that it does not have enough money to relocate from the site on the edge of the Fruitmarket.

Thousands of schoolchildren have visited the Arc and, being one of 18 architecture centres in England, it hosts exhibitions and courses for learning.

Arc chief executive Michael Haughton said it is possible to move the building but costs would need to be worked out first.

He said: ‘We do lots of outreach work so you don’t need to move the building to carry out the work.

‘Planning officers are recommending conditional approval of the application, being heard next Wednesday, which attracted just one objector who called it an eyesore that defiles the character and appearance of the old town conservation area.’

The £750,000 building has been criticised for not being as environmentally sustainable as originators claimed.
