The architect was asked to replace a dilapidated Victorian glass conservatory for film director Mike Leigh with a new structure that would allow reorganisation of the kitchen and dining area. The new 7.5 x 2.5m structure extends towards the garden to meet the existing single-storey extension. The existing wall between new and old has opened up dramatically to reconcile the new space with the geometry of the old, providing a new unity rather than an obvious contrast. Niches formed in the remaining sections of wall house laundry facilities and an American-sized stainless-steel fridge. The kitchen responds to a very particular brief with bespoke units, an oven wall and rooflights. The contract value was £65,000.
