McCabe prospect

The Scottish Executive could be about to pursue the creation of a CABE for Scotland, thinks Scottish-born Rab Bennetts, following a meeting with architectural advisers responsible for writing the country's first-ever architecture policy last week.

Bennetts was speaking at a Lighthouse event with Kathryn Findlay, to launch the Glasgow centre's three-year programme of talks, following publication of the policy last week. He said he had been told that the executive was 'not desperately impressed'with some of the institutions, such as RIAS and the Scottish Royal Fine Art Commission. He thinks the 'hidden agenda' of the document - which makes many references to the Lighthouse, instead of the more formal institutions - may be that the executive is to seek a more campaigning body, in the mould of CABE. 'It seems obvious the government is pursuing a non-institutional route, ' says Bennetts.
