John McAslan + Partners has seen off an international field to win the contest to overhaul and expand the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, Canada

The practice is understood to have beaten the likes of Wilkinson Eyre to bag the project and will head up a multidisciplinary team appointed to develop a masterplan for the proposed extension of the museum and its archives.

Around 40 firms from across the globe, including Foster + Partners, Frank Gehry and David Chipperfield, threw their hat into the ring to vie for the high-profile commission.

McAslan will work with local Victoria firm Merrick Architecture, Vancouver-based Office of Macfarlane Biggar, the Seattle office of Arup and Donald Luxton & Associates from Vancouver.

Professor Jack Lohman, chief executive officer of the Royal BC Museum, said: ‘The masterplan will provide an excellent foundation on which to ensure that the museum optimises its future potential whilst respecting Victoria’s great charm, beauty and intimacy.’

John McAslan added: ‘We are thrilled to have been selected by the Royal British Columbia Museum to lead the transformation of this renowned and historic institution as a key project in the +celebration of Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017.’
