McAslan and Moussavi pipped at post in Moscow museum contest

British practices John McAslan + Partners and Farshid Moussavi Architecture have narrowly missed out on a prestigious museum scheme in Moscow

The firms, both of which have London offices, were named on a six-strong shortlist for the Museum and Educational Centre of the Polytechnic Museum and Lomonosov Moscow State University.

But Italian practice Massimiliano Fuksas, bidding with local firm Speech, was named the competition winner in late March (winning scheme pictured). It is understood Danish big hitter 3XN was named runner-up.

The Polytechnic Museum in Moscow is one of the oldest and largest science and technology museums in the world.

The new Museum and Educational Centre is planned to exhibit scientific and technical achievements, with completion expected by 2018.

The Fuksas proposal was ‘based on the idea to create a contrast to the surrounding environment’.

Its proposal added: ‘The museum and educational centre should become a bright milestone and visualisation of the image of the new generation.’

The winning design features a double height glass base, three-storey upper volumes 25m high, a terrace level and two underground levels. It has an open-plan entrance hall with separate accesses to the different zones.

Moscow is an exciting place for architects at the moment, with the Russian Federation Council planning to more than double the size of the city.

In December 2012, John McAslan + Partners’ 38,500m² Mebe One Khimki Plaza commercial office project started on site in Moscow.
