Max Fordham: Free study and tool on school energy use

Max Fordham has revealed its latest study looking at the difference between predicted and actual energy usage in schools

Energy usage in new schools can be as much as twice above that predicted at the design stage.  

Max Fordham engineers investigated the problem, isolating issues most likely to undermine energy predictions.

They found ICT, the heating set point, lighting control, and overheating were all factors which contributed towards energy inefficiency.

Tamsin Tweddell of the company said: ‘You can design a low energy building but you won’t get one unless you engage with the operational issues.’

The report features an energy risk management tool which clients and the design team can use to ensure a joined-up approach to energy usage in new schools.

Tweddell said: ‘It’s a road map to manage energy usage all the way from briefing to the operational building.’

The tool focuses on the management of key input values used in energy performance prediction models.
