Manufacturer let us down on sitooterie

I would like to respond to your feature on the sitooteries structures at Belsay Hall (AJ 31.8.00).

Inflate has five-and-a-half years worth of specialist experience of experimenting with designing and producing inflatable products from small scale to architectural size, and chose to apply this process to the sitooterie structure. On this occasion the Inflate design team collaborated with an overseas manufacturer, a company endorsed by the Swiss Expo, for the production of the pneumatic inflatable.

Unfortunately it became apparent once the piece had been installed that the quality of manufacture did not meet the specifications of our team, leading to an ill-performing piece.

The manufacturer in question is unwilling to accept the costs for repair or re-make of the structure, which in turn has led to the Inflate sitooterie being withdrawn from the installation.

Fiona Mackenzie-Jenkin, press relations manager, Inflate
