The departure of Stephen Bayley from the Millennium Dome team was predictable from the moment it became clear that his role was advisory rather than supervisory. That leaves the whole shooting match without the Hugh Casson figure who gave the Festival of Britain such brilliant direction (aged 43). Options for a new supremo are limited: Imagination is a non-starter because New Millennium Experience boss Jenny Page fell out with boss Gary Withers. David Puttnam is also out, because Peter Mandelson does not get on with him. Perhaps Michael Grade could do the job - at least he knows Richard Rogers, architect of Channel 4's headquarters as well as the Dome.
