Man of moment

The Stirling Prize Ceremony at the riba starred guest of honour Peter Mandelson, on good form. Far from being the Prince of Darkness or the Murderer of Socialism As We Know It, he was amiability itself. He revealed that the best-kept secret of his private life - 'if anything is private now' - is his love of architecture; suggested that architect Seth Stein's work on remodelling his minimalist house had involved 'minimal work'; and launched an ironic plea to be considered for the Client of the Year award in 2000 as the man in charge of the Dome. This year's client of the year was Roland Paoletti, for the Jubilee Line extension project, crucial to the dome's success. 'It will be ready, won't it, Roland?' Mandy asked, with just a slight hint of menace.
