Make's Olympic Handball arena nears completion

[FIRST LOOK] The 6,500 seat handball arena, designed by Make for the London 2012 Games, is nearing completion

Due to finish ahead of schedule in the Spring, the venue which will host the modern pentathlon, fencing and goalball during the Paralympics has been wrapped in 3,000m² of copper.

After the Olympics, the arena will be used as ‘a flexible space capable of seating up to 7,500 spectators’ and cater for training and competition at all levels for indoor sports including basketball, wheelchair basketball, boxing, handball, badminton, judo, netball, futsal – a variant of football – and volleyball.

A health and fitness club with changing facilities and a cafe for local community use are also planned.

Latest pictures of the venue also show the progress made on the sprung wooden court surface, while a new webcam inside the arena gives regular updates on how the project is taking shape.

  • A box is a box is a box...what a total lack of imagination and this from the man some people thought was the real design driving force at Fosters! ( I don´t work for Norman by the way but must add that I am a great admirer of his work)

  • Hugely underwhelming.

  • Of course it's a box, it's a functional building to house 7500 spectators! I am assuming you would have preferred to see an 'overwhelming' roof of some sort which would probably comprimise the building's ability to provide the internal environment required to meet the brief for a handball arena? It is simple, well detailed with quality materials and compact due to it's chosen box form. I should add that I am not a Make employee but admire much of their work.
