[First look] Maccreanor Lavington Architects has won planning permission for this ‘affordable’ housing scheme in King’s Cross, north London
Known as ‘R5’ after its building plot name, the design will sit next to the 117-home ‘R4’ project, which is now being constructed.
The consent means the King’s Cross Central redevelopment project now has approval for 505 out of a planned 1,900 homes.
Maccreanor Lavington’s scheme features a separate block designed for elderly people, providing 40 apartments with communal areas.
The remaining dwellings are in a ‘northern block’, comprising 63 social rented apartments and 40 shared ownership flats.
Robert Evans of King’s Cross Central said: ‘This unanimous approval from Camden council is fantastic news.
‘We are already making terrific progress on the new affordable homes at building R4 and this decision means we can now deliver the R5 affordable housing at the same time.’
Alan Williams, group development director at social housing provider One Housing Group, added: ‘We are delighted that the plans for R5 have been approved and look forward to work starting on this plot.
‘Once complete next year, the new homes on plots R4 and R5 will make an important contribution to meeting the housing need across the borough, as well as make a huge difference to residents and the local community.’
Plans for the redevelopment of the 27ha King’s Cross site include 1,900 new homes, 316,000m² of office space, 46,000m² of retail space, 20 new streets, 10 public spaces and the restoration of 20 historic buildings.
