LSC and RIBA reveal college design awards shortlist

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the RIBA, with the AJ as media partner, have announced the shortlist for the Further Education Design Excellence Awards 2009

Among the five finalists is the £60 million York College by Sheffield-based Bond Bryan Architects, whose Matthew Boulton College in Birmingham was named joint winner in the awards last year (pictured).

Other shortlisted projects include Hawkins\Brown¹s Castle College in Nottingham, Birmingham¹s Joseph Chamberlain College by Nicholas Hare Architects, Middlesbrough College by Archial Architects, and the National Skills Academy for Financial Services in East London by the Tooley & Foster Partnership.

All the schemes have been delivered as part of the government¹s £2.3 billion Building Colleges for the Future programme, which has funded nearly 700 college projects since 2007.

This year¹s entrants were judged on their Œinnovation, boldness of design, inclusivity, flexibility and sustainability¹. The practice behind the winning college will scoop £5,000.

The five shortlisted schemes, along with Kendall College by A-cube Architects, are also vying to win a special award for sustainability, which could land the victorious practice £2,000.

Commenting on the finalists, Chris Banks, chairman of the LSC, said: Œ[The shortlisted projects] have created learning spaces that really inspire the whole community.

ŒFurther education is being transformed with world-class teaching and learning in world-class facilities.¹

The jury will visit all the shortlisted colleges and the winners will be announced in early summer 2009.
