The role of buildings is absolutely crucial in moving to a low carbon economy, says the Carbon Trust
Finding ways to reduce carbon emissions from buildings in their construction and use is critical if we are to meet the challenge of climate change and moving to a low carbon economy.
The Carbon Trust believes that low carbon refurbishment makes business sense. Putting energy efficiency at the heart of the refurbishment process will lead to cost savings many years thereafter. Tenants are also increasingly demanding low carbon buildings.
The Hampshire County Council building in Winchester, which is expected to be an exemplar for best-practice in low carbon refurbishment, has now reached the end of its four-year (from design to completion), £40m upgrade. From the beginning Hampshire County Council worked closely with the Carbon Trust, whose role has been to advise and help integrate low carbon technologies and cultures through their low carbon buildings technology accelerator.
This below video shows how the building has developed, what the council staff think about it and whether the innovative natural technologies and practices are working.
The Carbon Trust
The Carbon Trust is an independent company set up in 2001 in response to the threat of climate change.
Our mission is to accelerate the move to a low carbon economy, by working with organisations to reduce carbon emissions now and develop commercial low carbon technologies for the future.
We cut carbon emissions now by providing business and the public sector with expert advice, finance and accreditation; and by stimulating demand for low carbon products and services.
For example, we have already helped UK businesses and public sector organisations to save over 17MtCO2, delivering direct cost savings of over £1 billion. We aim to double this over the next 3 years.
We cut future carbon emissions by developing new low carbon technologies through project funding and management, investment and collaboration; and by identifying market barriers and practical ways to overcome them.
Every year we help to leverage £700 million of private sector investment into projects that support the development of the UK’s low carbon. We are aiming to transform the UK into a hub of low carbon innovation, and leverage up to £2.5bn of private sector funding into the low carbon sector.
