[First look] Loop Architecture has finished this 25 home, terrace housing scheme in Salford for housing group Great Places
Built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 by Wates Living Space, the £2.1 million Fitzwarren Street scheme features a range of three and four bedroom houses on a gateway site close to Urban Splash’s Chimneypot Park development designed by Shed KM.
The homes were timber-framed, flat pack withtheir internal layout based on the housing association’s standardised plans.
The Clerkenwell-based practice has also secured planning permission for a second, four-home phase in Fitzwarren Street for Great Places.
The architect’s view
Phil Catcheside of Loop Architecture said: ‘As a direct result of our Europan win in Oldham we were asked to work within a tight budget to produce something a little different from the norm on two sites in Salford. We invested our efforts in developing the street layout to try to stitch back together the disconnected surrounding fabric. We focused on the geometry and materials of the street elevation which include two subtly different brick types, Portland colour and finish pre-cast surrounds to the windows and doors.
‘One of the main departures from the ‘norm’ of developer timber frame houses was to consider how the proportion of the windows could be altered to become portrait in orientation. Our original suggestions for full heigh glazing was rebuffed on cost grounds so we developed the solution which is currently built with insulated panels below the clear glazing.’
