Looking good for a lot longer

focus briefing

Better known in the UK for its render systems, German company Sto is also a manufacturer of paints. Now it has introduced a new paint that it claims will not get dirty. Called StoLotusan Color, it is based on the properties of the lotus leaf, which is highly water-repellent.

Dr Wilhelm Barthlott has imitated the microstructure of the lotus leaf, which has a very particular ribbed texture, and transferred it to paint. The result, claims the company, is a high-performance product that allows rain to run off it, taking all its dirt with it. It is resistant to build-up of algae, bacteria and fungi, and stays looking good for much longer than conventional paints.
