Looking at the lifecycle of buildings

The departments of civil engineering and of architecture and building science at the University of Strathclyde have begun a research project to examine three aspects in the life cycle of buildings: durability, adaptability, and energy efficiency of their environmental services.

The objectives of the research are definition of appropriate metrics for those characteristics, analysis of their mutual conflicts, and identification of design paradigms which optimise the reconciliation of the conflicts. The results of the research should contribute to the design of more sustainable buildings.

The focus of the research will be higher-education institutions, as they comprise a wide range of building types, have to develop a life-cycle strategy for both the very short and very long term, their age-range is extensive, and they have well-established estates-management operations which hold information on capital and recurrent expenditure.

The research was initiated and wil be co-ordinated by: Professor David Langford (department of civil engineering, tel 0141 548 3171), Professor Ian MacLeod (department of civil engineering, tel 0141 548 3773) and Professor Thomas Maver (department of architecture and built environment, tel 0141 548 3997). The researchers are Dr Branka Dimitrijevic and Xing Zhang (tel 0141 548 4687).

The research team plans to establish a professional consultation base which should contribute to the critical assessment of three phases of the research work: metric definition, building analysis and strategy guidelines. All interested professionals are invited to contact the researchers.
