The London Development Agency has opened the door to a potential goldmine of work for architects by claiming the capital’s suburbs have space for another 500,000 homes
Research by the agency says seven south London suburbs could be revitalised by new housing developments and goes on to discuss how the 500,000 extra households could be accommodated in the capital by 2026, without losing the distinctive qualities and heritage of the individual town centres.
Researchers focused on the Old Kent Road, Anerley Hill, Balham, Morden, Lea Green, West Norwood and Purley and revealed how various urban design ‘scenarios’ – such as mid-density low-rise homes, for example - could improve neighbourhoods.
Geoff Raw, director of design, strategy & planning at the LDA, said: ‘Londoners need more homes and good-quality homes that create vibrant, desirable neighbourhoods where people want to live.
‘This study shows that far from creating unpopular identikit towns, well-planned and well designed homes can revitalise London’s suburbs and make them even more distinct.’
