Listed building photos to be freely available on Internet

A photograph of every listed building in England will be posted on the Internet if a bid for lottery funding by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England is successful. The project, 'Images of England', will document all 450,000 listed structures. All will be digitised and be available free on the Internet - making this, said an rchme spokesman, 'one of the largest freely available picture libraries on the Internet'.

The rchme already has an extensive picture library, but it does not cover every listed building. The new batch of pictures will be taken by volunteers. The rchme is seeking just over £3 million from the Millennium Festival Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund for the cost of digitising and placing the images on the Internet, and has already advertised in the European Journal for a contractor.
